Healing is from Allah (SWT) Italic
Islam teaches that Allah is the ultimate healer (Ash-Shāfī). The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“Allah has not sent down a disease except that He has also sent down its cure.”
— Sahih al-Bukhari (5678), Sahih Muslim (2204) scene,
This means Muslims are encouraged to seek treatment, including through herbal or natural means, as a form of trust (tawakkul) and effort (asbāb).:
2. Prophetic Medicine (Tibb al-Nabawi) The Prophetic Medicine includes many herbal and natural remedies recommended by the Prophet ﷺ. Some examples: Honey — “There is healing for mankind in it.” (Qur’an 16:69) Black seed (Nigella sativa) — “Use the black seed, for indeed it is a cure for every disease except death.” (Sahih al-Bukhari 5687) Olive oil — Mentioned in the Qur’an as blessed (Qur’an 24:35), and used both internally and externally. Senna, costus, and henna — Used for cleansing and treatment. These examples show that herbal and natural remedies are deeply rooted in Islamic tradition.
Conditions for Herbal Medicine in Islam Islam encourages the use of herbal medicine under certain guidelines: ✅ Permissible (Halal) Ingredients — The herbs used must be lawful, not harmful or intoxicating. ✅ Scientific & Ethical Use — Muslims are encouraged to use knowledge, testing, and expert advice. ✅ No Superstition or Shirk — The treatment should not involve charms, magic, or beliefs contrary to Tawheed (belief in one God). ✅ Balance and Moderation — Medicine should not replace faith, nor should faith replace medicine; both work together.
4. Seeking Treatment is Sunnah The Prophet ﷺ encouraged seeking treatment: “Seek treatment, O servants of Allah, for Allah has not created a disease except that He has also created its cure.” — Sunan Abu Dawood (3855) Thus, using herbal medicine aligns with Islamic teachings — it’s part of caring for the body, which is an amanah (trust) from Allah.
In summary: Herbal medicine is highly respected in Islam. It fits within the concept of Tibb al-Nabawi (Prophetic Medicine). As long as it’s halal, safe, and used with faith in Allah, it is Islamically encouraged.
